History

PANO’s organization was patterned after the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA).

The original purpose of PANO was to provide a network for local paralegals to share information concerning areas of practice.  Jean A. McIntyre recalls many of PANO’s charter members were the paralegal in the office.  Rather than ask supervising attorneys questions and risk leaving the impression that U.T. wasn’t teaching practical information, members called each other.  PANO filled a great need; so, its membership mushroomed.

Initially, PANO membership was open to individuals who had been continuously employed as a paralegal for at least thirty days; individuals pursuing a course of study in legal assisting; and graduates of a legal assisting program.  Over the past quarter-century, the criteria for membership have been refined.

In July 1978, PANO’s members made their first major decision: which national organization with which to affiliate.  The members chose NALA because it was Avery strong.  By doing so, PANO not only became the nation’s first local association affiliated with NALA, but they gained exposure to developments within the profession on a national scale as several PANO members were quite active in the national organization in the late 1970s.

When information about NALA’s Certified Legal Assistant Examination arrived in Toledo, it seemed only natural that Anne Paul and Jean A. McIntyre, two of PANO’s charter members, sat for the Spring, 1979 CLA exam at the Commodore Perry Hotel. They became the first two of a long series of PANO members to successfully endure the two-day examination.

At the annual meeting in June 2004, the membership voted to change its name from the Toledo Association of Legal Assistants to the Paralegal Association of Northwest Ohio.

Charter Members  Members of the University of Toledo’s Legal Assisting programs first two graduating classes formed the Toledo Association of Legal Assistants (PANO), a professional organization for paralegals, in 1977.
